Seeing Water

Water is a universal symbol of the unconscious. Its clarity, depth, and state reflect your emotional condition and the flow of your inner world.

Spiritual Interpretation

In almost all ancient traditions, water is the source of life, purification, and spiritual renewal. Clear, calm water symbolises inner peace while turbulent, dark water signals spiritual storms. Diving into and emerging from water symbolises the death-and-rebirth ritual; the baptism tradition also draws on this deep symbolism.

Astrological Interpretation

Water dreams are most powerfully associated with the three water signs — Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Neptune transits and periods when the Moon is in a water sign are times when these dreams become more frequent. New and full moon phases can also trigger water-themed dreams.

Psychological Interpretation

For Jung, water is the most universal symbol of the unconscious. The depth of water corresponds to the intensity of unconscious material. Clear, still water represents inner peace; murky, dark water represents unprocessed emotions; overflowing water represents emotions that are overflowing and uncontrollable. Water animals (fish, crocodiles) symbolise contents rising from the unconscious to the surface.

Freudian Interpretation

For Freud, water symbolises a return to the prenatal amniotic environment — longing for the original sense of security in the womb. Seas or wide water surfaces can represent the mother and the early attachment object. Entering water or swimming in dark waters corresponds to sinking into the unconscious and approaching repressed contents.
